McGill skier sent to Siberia to represent Canada at the FISU world university games

MONTREAL -- Two McGill students from Ottawa are part of a 61-member delegation representing Canada at the FISU Winter Universiade, also known as the world university games, in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Mar. 2-12.

Abigail Thomas, a kinesiology sophomore, will compete in alpine skiing, while Mzia Lee-Pottie, a psychology and neuroscience freshman, will compete in the women's biathlon.

All medal events and team sport medal rounds (semifinals, bronze and gold medal games) will be streamed live at FISU.TV. A free account is required to watch. FISU is also making selected events from the above available on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Attached is a schedule of what is being streamed where.

The Canadian men's and women's hockey teams are exclusively composed of U SPORTS student-athletes, while five other sports are composed of the Canadian national teams in alpine and cross country skiing, biathlon, curling and snowboard. All five teams are selected and managed in partnership with each respective National Sport Organization.

"This is a watershed moment for those who have received a nomination and a testament to their hard work and dedication," said Roger Archambault, who was selected as Team Canada chef de mission for the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade last September and has served as the assistant athletic director, responsible for high performance, with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, as well as manager of team services with the Canadian Olympic Committee at Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012. "Representing Canada on the world stage is a rare opportunity, together as one team, our student-athletes, coaches, and mission staff will carry the Canadian flag with pride as we compete against the world on this one of a kind sports stage. I am already very proud of this group."

Canada won three medals at the 2017 FISU Winter Games, including gold in women's curling, a silver medal in women's hockey and a bronze in men's hockey. Full Team Canada medal history at the FISU Games is available here.

The FISU opening ceremonies will be held Mar. 2 at the Platinum Arena, beginning at 8:19 a.m. ET (8:19 p.m. local time). Full schedule is available here.

"We are extremely proud of every student-athlete and staff member representing Team Canada at the Games," said Lisette Johnson-Stapley, chief sport officer at U SPORTS. "The FISU Games are the Olympics of university sport. So many memories are made on and off the field of play for our Canadian student-athletes, who are unique in that they balance academics with athletics, and they deserve the chance to wear the maple leaf. We are looking forward to supporting all of our teams as they go for gold in Russia."
