Sandrine Veillette, running in her hometown, finished fourth in a field of 58 to lead the McGill women's cross-country to a second-place result at the Laval invitational meet, Saturday, on the Plains of Abraham.
The Laval Rouge et Or swept both the women's and men's titles.
On the women's side, Laval collected 33 points to finish ahead of McGill (48), Montreal (64), UQTR (145), Sherbrooke (149), UQAC (193) and Concordia (218).
Catherine Beauchemin of the Rouge et Or won the six-kilometre race in 21 minutes, 55 seconds. She was followed by teammmates
Jessy Lacourse (22:13) and
Aurelie Dube-Lavoie (22:36).
Veillette, a management sophomore, led the top five Martlets in a time of 23:16. Other McGill scorers included
Celine Marks (8th; 23:39), a psychology junior from St. Bruno, Que., senior
Morgane Butler (9th; 23:41) of Sudbury, Mass., junior
Murielle Aglot (23:42) of St. Bruno and sophomore
Laura Carlton (24:12) of Bracebridge, Ont. Missing from the team's lineup was junior
Elizabeth Hirsch, who won silver at the McGill Open last week, and senior
Meggie Dargis, who won three races last season and merited second-team all-Canadian honours.
Laval's
Jean-Simon Desgagnes struck gold in the men's 8k race, placing atop the 71-runner field in 25:44. Teammates
Alexis Lepage (26:04) and
Felix Lapointe-Pilote (26:13) claimed the other medal positions.
McGill's top male was
Santiago Bessai, who placed ninth overall in 26:54. Rounding out the Redmen scorers was
Jeremy O'Brand (12th; 27:36),
Thomas Csisztu (19th; 28:20),
Jack Adams (37th; 29:41) and
Hugo Schutzberg (42nd; 30:06).
In the team scoring, Laval was first of eight universities with their top five runners finishing first, second, third, fourth and sixth for 16 points, one point shy of the best possible score. UQAM was next with 104, followed by Montreal (114), McGill (119), UQTR (137), Sherbrooke (148), Concordia (195) and UQAC (213).
Next up on the seven-event fall season is the Sherbrooke Invitational meet on Sept. 29.
