TORONTO --
David DeAveiro, head coach of the RSEQ champion McGill University men's basketball team, has been named by Canada Basketball to serve on staff for the Canadian squad headed to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, April 4-15.
He joins McGill senior
Alex Kiss-Rusk, who was named to play for the Canadian women's team at the Games.
DeAveiro will serve as an assistant, along with UBC's
Kevin Hanson, to head coach Kirby Schepp of the Manitoba Bisons.
DeAveiro, a 53-year-old native of Toronto, was recently named as the RSEQ's coach of the year for the fifth consecutive season after leading McGill to a 14-2 record. "Coach D" has won eight conference coach-of-the-year awards in 17 seasons, including three in the OUA East (2006, 2007, 2010). He owns a career coaching record of 379-237 in 616 games overall (.615).
Over his eight years as Redmen bench boss, DeAveiro has guided his troops to six regular-season pennants, four conference championships, four appearances at the national Final Eight tourney, an impressive 95-33 record in league play and a 9-3 record in the RSEQ playoffs.
He has previously had an extensive coaching history as an assistant coach with numerous Canadian national teams, including the men's senior, development and junior levels. In June, 2015, DeAveiro led the Canadian national under-16 team to a FIBA Americas U-16 championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. In 2013, he guided Canada to bronze-medal finish at the same event, held in Maldonado, Uruguay. In 2012, he led Canada to a fifth-place finish at the FIBA under-17 world championship in Lithuania. He previously had a coaching stint at the Nike NBA Americas team camp in September, 2012.
The Canadian men's team will open the tournament on April 6 at 3:30 a.m. (Eastern) against Australia at the Cairns Convention Centre. Click

Basketball has only been on the Commonwealth Games program once, at Melbourne 2006 (Canada did not enter teams in the tournament), and Australia won both the men's and women's tournaments at those Games.
The 2018 men's tournament includes four teams in Pool A: Australia, Nigeria, New Zealand and Canada and four teams in Pool B: England, Cameroon, India and Scotland. The Canadian women are also in Pool A, along with Australia, England and Mozambique, while Pool B features New Zealand, Jamaica, India and Malaysia.
