KINGSTON, Ont. –
Meggie Dargis of the McGill University Martlets, finished 12th of 155 entries to earn second-team all-Canadian status at the U SPORTS women's cross-country championship on Saturday afternoon at Fort Henry Hill in Kingston, Ont. The 14 quickest runners merited the honour, with the top seven making the first team.
It was 29th time in McGill history that the Martlets had produced an All-Canadian and the second consecutive year that Dargis had qualifed for second-team honours (see below for complete list). The 5-foot-2 distance runner from Trois-Rivieres, Que., led McGill to a fifth-place finish of 20 schools, the team's best result since finishing fifth in 2011. Dargis, a 22-year-old management senior, completed the eight-kilometre race in 29 minutes, 1.2 seconds. Other McGill runners in the scoring included
Elizabeth Hersch (21st, 29:41.1),
Celine Marks (38th, 29:41.1),
Murielle Aglot (53rd, 30:44.9) and
Morgane Butler (71st, 31:04.1).
On the men's side, the only McGill runner who qualified for the race was
Santiago Bessai, who finished 68th overall, completing the 10k course in 33:11.8.
In the women's individual championship, Queen's freshman
Brogan MacDougall posted a gold medal time of 27:48.6, while Laval's
Aurélie Dubé-Lavoie (28:02.1) and
Catherine Beauchemin (28:05.4) claimed silver and bronze, respectively.
Université Laval became the first RSEQ-based institution to capture the women's banner, while the Calgary Dinos claimed their first men's title.
The Rouge et Or women placed first of 20 schools in the team scoring with a total of 55 points. The host Queen's Gaels, who had been ranked No.1 all season, fell just short of the national title with a team total of 62. Guelph was third with 108, followed by UBC (191) and McGill (195) to round out the top five.
Brogan was named athlete of the year in addition to winning rookie-of-the-year honours. Laval's
Félix-Antoine Lapointe took home the coach-of-the-year award and Victoria's
Alison Irvine received the leadership and community service award.
The men's individual title was won by Guelph's
Connor Black who merited athlete-of-the-year honours after running the race in a time of 31:13.0, which included a tight sprint down the finish as he fended off silver medalist
Jean-Simon Desgagnés of the Laval Rouge et Or by a fraction of a second (31:13.6). Calgary's
Russell Pennock finished third on the podium (31:16.2).
Two members of the Queen's Gaels came away with some hardware as
Ruben Sansom took home rookie-of-the-year honours, while
Doug Lamont was named coach of the year. The leadership and community service award went to Toronto's
Craig Klomp.
The Calgary Dinos finished first in the team scoring with 75, which was 14 points ahead of second-place Guelph and 19 ahead of third-place McMaster.
