MONTREAL -- The University of Guelph swept both the men's and women's titles at the 23rd annual McGill Team Challenge track and field meet, a two-day competition held at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Jan. 26-27. Four meet records fell, along with one Fieldhouse mark and a Quebec-age standard.

The event, billed as the largest indoor meet in Canada, featured 18 university teams and 702 athletes. McGill finished ninth in both the men's and women's team standings. The Redmen produced two bronze medal finishes, while the Martlets had one bronze.

Guelph showed why they are currently ranked No.1 in both men's and women's divisions. Their women collected nine gold medals en route to scoring 168 points, well ahead of second-place Laval. It was the ninth time that they have won the McGill meet. On the men's side, the Gryphons, won their sixth McGill title, taking home five gold medals and scoring 183 points, also a significant advantage over second-place Laval (125.5).

Guelph's Mark Emode set a Fieldhouse and meet record in the men's heptathlon with 4,979 points, surpassing the 4,946 established by Laval's Pater Malonge-Nsake last year.

The Gryphons also set meet marks in the men's high jump (Sean Cate, 2.16m) and the women's 4x200m relay (1:38.89), a foursome composed of Morgan Byng, Shyvonne Roxborough, Tessa Hamilton and Jenna Smith. The other meet record to tumble was in the women's 1000m, where Jessy Lacourse of the Laval Rouge et Or ran a 2:47.09, which also established a Quebec record in the espoir age group.

Leading the way for the McGill Redmen were bronze medalists Matthew Daly of Pte. Claire, Que., and Benjamin Evans of Toronto.

Daly, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound political science freshman, was clocked at 8.61 seconds in the 60m hurdles, while Evans, a 6-foot-4, 170-pound arts freshman, cleared a height of 3.65m in the pole vault.

For the McGill Martlets, the 4x800m relay squad finished third with a time of 9:30.97. The quartet featured sophomore Chloe Fleurent-Gregoire of Laval, Que., Lianne van Es, a first-year exchange student from the Netherlands, freshman Laura Carlton of Bracebridge, Ont., and junior Morgane Butler of Sudbury, Ont.

Next on the agenda for the McGill team is the Fasttrack National Invitational meet at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., Feb. 9 and the Cornell Invitational in Ithica, N.Y., on Feb. 11.
