Box Score
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Senior Noah Daoust scored a game-high 21 points as the McGill men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat the University of Texas at El Paso Miners 86-82 in overtime at Banco National Arena in Costa Rica, Thursday.

It was McGill's second win in as many nights over UTEP -- an NCAA Div. 1 program -- and their fifth in 10 confrontations against U.S. based schools dating back to last season.

The game was an old-fashioned shootout that featured a whopping 22 lead changes. The teams were tied at 16-16 after the opening quarter. But Texas jumped into a 31-21 lead midway through the second stanza and held a 39-35 advantage at halftime. The Miners squeaked ahead 54-53 after three and regulation time ended at 75-75 -- thanks to a pair of missed free-throws by McGill with two seconds remaining -- to force a five-minute extra session.

Daoust, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound centre from Dorval, Que., shot 7-for-15 from the field, including a 4-for-9 effort from three-point range. He was 3-for-3 from the foul-line and added three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

He was one of four Redmen to reach double figures in scoring. Seniors Jenning Leung and Avery Cadogan added 18 apiece, while freshman Sam Jenkins had 15.

Cadogan, a 6-foot-3, 176-pound guard, went 5-for-6 from downtown and played a game-high 36 minutes and 18 seconds. The sociology senior from Winnipeg was the most pleasant surprise of the trip. He led the team in scoring with 61 points in four contests and contributed 18 rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Cadogan, who posted a career-high 30 points in the win over Kent State on Monday -- including a single-game school record with eight treys -- shot a sizzling 69 per cent from the field (20/29), 68 per cent from the arc (15/22) and dropped six of nine from the line.

Five players from UTEP reached double-digits, with Omega Harris, Trey Wade, Paul Thomas and 6-foot-11 centre Kelvin Jones tallying 13 points apiece, while Isiah Osborne knocked down 10.

Texas had a 38-35 edge in rebounds but there was little to choose from in the other departments. They were tied in turnovers (16-16), steals (6-6) and blocked shots (1-1).

McGill's perimeter game proved to be the difference as they nailed 14 of 31 long bombs, compared to a 5-for-22 effort by UTEP. The Redmen shot 47 per cent from the field (28/59) and hit on 16 of 25 freebies. The Miners shot 46 per cent (32/70) and went 13-for-21 from the charity stripe.

Both teams were missing key personnel, with five McGill veterans unable to make the trip, including seniors Dele Ogundokun (the Quebec league MVP last season), plus Sebastian Beckett, Francois Bourque and Daniel Pieper as well as junior Isaiah Cummins.

The Miners, who dropped to 0-2 on their first international trip in 12 years, have a quick turnaround and will face UBC Friday at 11:30 a.m.

McGill, which improved to 3-4 in preseason play against NCAA teams, will return home from their six-day excursion to Central America for three more American opponents at home in Love Competition Hall.

The Redmen will host the St. Francis College Terriers from Brooklyn, N.Y.,  (Aug. 28), followed by the Siena College Saints from Loudonville, N.Y., (Aug. 30) and the Hofstra University Pride from Hempstead, N.Y. (Sept. 2). The first two games are 7 p.m. tip-offs, followed by a 3 p.m. start. Advance tickets can be purchased online. Adults are $15, while staff, students and seniors are $10. The admission rate for community groups is $40 and children 12-and-under are admitted free.
