Nicole Deacon and
Dori Yeats each scored a pair of tries as the McGill University women's rugby team snapped a five-game slide with their first win over the season, Friday, a 40-8 decision over visiting Bishop's.
The result, played before a doubleheader crowd of 304 at Percival Molson Stadium, also marked the first career conquest for rookie head coach
Magali Harvey, who is still listed as a carded athlete with Rugby Canada.
Deacon, a 5-foot-9 centre from Barrie, Ont., put the Martlets on the board with a try in the 32nd minute of play, also opened the second-half scoring with a 49th-minute try.
Yeats, a 5-foot-3 flanker from Montreal, scored tries in the 53rd and 68th minutes. The civil engineering sophomore, who is also a member of the Canadian national wrestling team, now has four tries in just two career collegiate rugby contests.
Sarah Wimmer of Kimberley, B.C., and
Michelle Blair of Franklin, Que., also scored tries in the match. Fullback
Dana Silerova of Terrasse Vaudreuil, Que., successfully converted five of the six McGill tries.
Emily Norris had opened the scoring for Bishop's with a penalty kick in the 16th minute and teammate
Erika Scott added an unconverted try in the 61st.
Bishop's (0-6) plays Concordia (3-3) on Thursday, Oct. 12, while the Martlets (1-5) will close out their season by visiting the Montreal Carabins (3-3) on Saturday, Oct. 14.
