VICTORIA, BC — Noah Daoust and Dele Ogundokun tallied 14 points apiece as the McGill men's basketball team surprised Victoria 69-44 on Day 2 of their Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament at the CARSA Performance Gym, Friday.

The result avenged a 63-54 loss to Victoria in the last meeting between these teams -- a national quarter-final at the CIS Final Eight men's basketball tournament in Ottawa, on March 7, 2014.

"I thought we played a good McGill team tonight. They're a veteran team and we just plain got outclassed a little bit tonight to be honest," said Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp. "We have a young team, there's going to be some growing pains and tonight was one of those nights."

McGill, which also qualified for the CIS national championships last season, came out and took control of the game right from the beginning. They outscored the Vikes 19-6 in the first quarter.

The Vikes battled back in the second quarter, led by third-year forward Jake Newman.

"He was one guy that competed and got after it a little bit tonight. There are not a lot of positives from tonight, but he was a guy that stepped up for us," said Beaucamp.

McGill came out in the second half and quickly reasserted their lead, scoring 21 points in the quarter.

The Vikes tried their hardest to work their way back into the game in fourth quarter, but it was a case of too little too late.

"It's not just about competing, its about playing smart. Tonight we saw some things that we didn't react to very well and offensively we aren't really in sync right now and that showed," said Beaucamp.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday. The Redmen will take on the Regina Cougars at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern). The Vikes meanwhile, will finish their tourney schedule against the McMaster Marauders at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern).
