David McCulloch poured in 25 points as his McMaster Marauders rallied from an early 10-point deficit to defeat McGill 69-62 in the opening round of the Guy Vetrie Memorial men's basketball tournament, Thursday.
It was McGill's first preseason game in six weeks since posting a 2-3 record against NCAA teams in August. The Redmen went to the free-throw line only 16 times and came away with 11 points, compared to a whopping 41 trips by McMaster, which netted 29 freebies.
McGill jumped out of the gate quickly with a 9-0 run and led 11-1 before McMaster found their game, taking a 16-14 lead after the opening quarter. The Redmen rebounded to take a 30-28 edge into halftime but McMaster roared out after the break to outcscore McGill 21-11 in the third quarter.
Joining McCullough in double figures was
Lazar Kojovic and
Rohan Boney with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Leading the way for McGill was junior
Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., who tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, one blocked shot, one steal and a pair of assists. He shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the line.
Teammate
Jenning Leung contributed 10 points, while
Dele Ogundokun and
Daniel Pieper added eight apiece.
McGill shot 41.5 per cent from the floor (22/53) and made seven of 22 three-pointers, compared to the Marauders, who connected on 31.5 per cent (17/54) and sunk six of 15 treys.
The Redmen (2-4) will play host Victoria (1-1) on Friday at 11 p..m. (Eastern), while McMaster (1-0) meets Regina (0-1).
