Spencer Bromley

MONTREAL-- Spencer Bromley become the first student-athlete from McGill University to be drafted by a National Lacrosse League team when his name was called on Monday evening at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, Ont.

A 21-year-old economics senior who was honoured just hours before the draft at an on-campus reception recognizing the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, Bromley was selected in the fifth round, 48th overall, by the two-time NLL defending champion Saskatchewan Rush.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound attacker from Surrey, B.C., was one of a record five picks out of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association. He was joined by Guelph teammates Justin Martin (Buffalo, 13th overall) and Kevin Orleman (Buffalo, 18th), Trent's Dan Michel (New England, 38th) and Laurier's Danton Miller (Vancouver, 49th).

A co-captain with the Redmen, he chose to attend McGill over several NCAA lacrosse scholarship offers. A physical player, who was awarded the team's Bell Ringer Award last season, Bromley was recruited out of the Burnaby Mountain Selects in British Columbia, where he was voted as the team's offensive MVP. He earned a roster spot with the Redmen during his freshman year in 2013 and established himself as a starter as a sophomore and was voted a CUFLA East all-star. last fall, he helped guide McGill to the national championship. In the off-season, he plays box lacrosse with the Delta Islanders, where he them win the provincial Junior A title.
