MONTREAL --
Rémi De Marassé scored eight points for the Montreal Carabins as they rallied from a first-half deficit to defeat McGill 23-19 in RSEQ men's rugby at Terrain Vincent d'Indy, Saturday.
It halted a 10-0-1 undefeated streak for McGill, the defending provincial champions, which hadn't lost a game since a 28-21 setback to Concordia on Nov. 11, 2014 in the 2014 RSEQ league championship game. The result also avenged Montreal's heart-breaking 10-9 loss to McGill on the final play of the conference's gold medal game last fall.
The Carabins took a 10-0 advantage early, but McGill recovered to lead 14-13 at halftime on the strength of two converted tries.
De Marassé, a centre from France, made two penalty kicks and successfully converted a try by
Raphaël Collongues in the 18th minute.
Sophomore
Spencer Main of Port Hope, Ont., and seniors
James Wilson of England and
Jordan Nimat of Sherbrooke, Que., scored tries for the Redmen, with exchange student
Andrew Manson of Scotland making two first-half conversions.
Montreal's
Éloi Collignon was issued a rare red card midway through the second half, forcing the Carabins to finish the game a man down. Despite the setback, the hosts managed to score another try and collect the win.
Both teams next play on Oct. 2, when Montreal (3-0-0) visits Concordia (0-2-0) and the Redmen (2-1-0) travel to face winless Sherbrooke (0-2-1).
