MONTREAL -- The 1969 McGill University football team, which captured the Yates Cup league championship and the Atlantic Bowl national semifinal, was honoured by the McGill Alumni Association in an annual awards gala at the Omni Hotel, Tuesday.
The team, often referred to as the "Mooney Men" in recognition of their late head coach Tom Mooney, received the Charles H. Peters Alumni Group of the Year Award, presented to a group or class or alumni branch that has maintained close ties to McGill through reunions, events and correspondence. They have held reunions every five years and in 2009, celebrated their 40th anniversary by raising $250,000 for the McGill football program.
That edition of the Redmen finished atop the Ontario-Quebec Athletic Association East Division standings with a 6-1 record. In the 46 years since then, McGill has only posted division-leading finishes three times -- in 1973, 1981 and 2002.
In the post-season, they skunked Toronto to capture the Yates Cup league championship, then defeated UNB 20-8 in the Atlantic Bowl before suffering a 24-15 setback to Manitoba at the CIAU championship game in Toronto, McGill's first-ever Vanier Cup appearance.
The 1969 squad featured three All-Canadians, namely fullback
David Fleiszer, offensive lineman
Jay Harris and defensive back
Chris Rumball.
