MONTREAL --
Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg, Man., came off the bench to record his first career "double-double" as McGill defeated Laurentian 74-62 in exhibition men's basketball, at Love Competition Hall on Saturday.
Five different Redmen reached double-digits in scoring as McGill extended their win streak to four and improved to 6-4 in preseason play, including a 4-1 mark against CIS opponents.
Cadogan, a 6-foot-3, 176-pound guard, tallied 12 points and tore down a game-high 14 rebounds, including eight in the defensive zone. The sociology sophomore shot 4-for-12 from the field, sank one of two attempted treys, netted three of five free-throw attempts and stole one ball in 24 minutes of court time.
McGill had a 17-13 lead after the first quarter, a 31-24 advantage at halftime and a 51-45 margin after three, then outscored Laurentian 23-17 in the final frame.
Jenning Leung and
Kendrick Jolin each chipped in a dozen points.
Leung, a psychology senior from the Philippines, shot 1-for-6 from three-point range and went an impressive 9-for-10 on free throws. He grabbed one offensive rebound had an assist and a pair of blocks.
Jolin, a freshman point-guard from Montreal, shot 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and was perfect on both of his free-throw attempts. He collected one defensive rebound, four assists and a game-high three steals.
Noah Daoust and
Isaiah Cummins rounded out McGill's double-figure scorers with 10 points apiece.
Daoust, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound centre from Dorval, Que., drained half of his 10 shots from the field, pulled down five rebounds, and had a pair of steals. Cummins, a science sophomore from Oshawa, Ont., shot 4-for-6 from the field, including one from downtown, and was 1-for-2 from the line. He also pulled down two defensive rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
Laurentian's
Kadre Gray led all players with 24 points and five rebounds in a losing cause. Teammates
Othel Watson and
Darcy Watt contributed 10 points apiece.
The Redmen had a 36-32 edge in rebounds, a 5-1 advantage in blocks, an 8-1 lead in steals a 16-6 difference in turnovers.
McGill shot 33.8 per cent from the floor (24/71), went 6-for-20 from three-point range and drained 20 of 25 chances from the stripe. The Voyageurs shot 33.3 per cent (21/63), made eight of 25 from beyond the arc and went 12-for-15 on free-throws.
In an earlier game at Love Competition Hall, McMaster squeaked past UBC-Okanagan 84-82. Laurentian returns to the court against UBC-Okanagan on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 11 a.m.
The Redmen are off Sunday and will close their preseason schedule at the Jack Donohue Tip-off Tournament, hosted by Ottawa, Oct. 28-30. They open against Waterloo before taking on Toronto and the Gee-Gees.
