Stingers swarm significantly to win Drummond Cup contest in season send-off for rugby Martlets

MONTREAL -- Frédérique Rajotte scored 20 points to lead Concordia to a massive 68-5 win over McGill in the RSEQ women's rugby season finale, at Concordia Stadium, Sunday. Up for grabs was the 12th annual Kelly-Anne Drummond Cup, symbolic of women's university rugby supremacy in Montreal and a tribute to the former Stinger player who died tragically on Oct. 4, 2004.

Victoria Heseltine, a physical education senior from Senneville, Que., scored McGill's only try of the match. A young Martlets squad finished their disappointing campaign with a 1-6 record and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year after qualifying in each of the previous 25 seasons.

Rajotte, a 5-foot-5 centre from Markham, Ont., tallied her points with four tries in the contest.

Other try-scorers for the Stingers were Emilie Belanger with three, along with Katerina Syragakis, Kelsey Martin, Mercedes Martino, Lia Hoyte, and Emily Hickson with one each. Senior winger Alexandra Ste-Marie made four successful conversions.
Third-place Concordia visits second-place Laval in one conference semifinal on Oct. 22. The other semi pits fourth-place Montreal at division-leading Ottawa.

Drummond was a member of the Concordia women's rugby team from 1999 through 2001. She graduated with a major in Communications in 2002. After the game Doreen Haddad, Kelly-Anne's mother, and members of her family presented the trophy to the captains of the winning team.It was the eighth consecutive win for Concordia, who defeated the Montréal Carabins 47-0 last October to win the Cup. The game traditionally features Concordia and McGill. The latter won the first four contests. Donations were collected at the gate to help support WomenAWARE programs. The Montreal organization is a non-profit, community-based centre founded by former victims of domestic violence. Its mission is to support, inspire and empower as well as prevent and strive to end domestic violence against women, men, youth and children.
