Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored 25 points as McGill defeated Regina 82-61 at the Guy Vetrie Memorial men's basketball tournament in the Carsa Performance Gym, Saturday.
It was the second win in three west coast games for the Redmen, who evened their preseason record at 4-4 overall, including a 2-3 mark against NCAA teams.
Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2, 222-pound management senior, shot 10-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc, and sank one of two free-throw attempts. He also nabbed six rebounds and stole one ball in 33 minutes of court time.
McGill had just a 20-19 edge after the first quarter but improved to 47-39 at the half and led by a comfortable 64-50 after three. The Redmen had a 42-41 margin in rebounds and a 20-18 advantage in turnovers. Regina held a 7-6 edge in steals and made the only block of the game.
Jenning Leung, a psychology senior from the Philippines, contributed 14 points, on 5-for-14 shooting from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range. He also had two assists and a pair of steals. Senior
Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., scored eight points and led all players in rebounds with 14, including 11 in the defensive zone. He went 3-for-7 from the field and 2-for-4 from the line to go along with one steal and a trio of assists. Junior
Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg, Man., tallied nine points in just 10 minutes off the bench. The 6-foot-3 guard sank half of his eight chances from the field, including a trey.
Stephen Shields led the Cougars with 15 points in 18 minutes, followed by
Brandon Tull and
Alex Igual with 12 points apiece.
McGill shot 50.8 per cent from the floor (32/63), 11-for-26 from the three-point range (42.3) and netted seven of 21 chances from the stripe. Regina shot 34.9 per cent (22/63), made just three of 19 from beyond the arc (15.8) and shot just 56 per cent on free throws (14-for-25).
After a long and ardous trip out west, the Redmen (4-4) get three weeks off before returning to the court at their own Redbird Classic tournament, Oct. 21-23, at Love Competition Hall. Their first game of the tournament will be against UBC-Okanagan, followed by Laurentian the next night. McMaster is also on hand for the event.
