Box Score KINGSTON, Ont. –
Noah Daoust, a sophomore from Dorval, Que., came off the bench and scored 14 points as No.3-ranked McGill defeated long-time rival Queen's 70-61 in men's exhibition basketball before a boisterous, full house at the ARC gymnasium, Saturday.
The result avenged a 77-61 setback to the Gaels in their last rendezvous, the final of the Frank Tindall tournament in Kingston on Oct. 5, 2014.
It was McGill's first game in more than a month dating back to an 82-80 decision over Laval on Dec. 5.
The lead changed hands nine times, with Queen's taking a 21-19 edge after the opening quarter but McGill turned on the jets to take a 41-31 advantage into the halftime break. The Redmen kept their foot on the gas to take a comfortable 60-45 lead into the final stanza.
Other leading scorers for McGill were starters
Jenning Leung (11) and team captain
Vincent Dufort (10), who added seven rebounds before an estimated 70 family members and friends. The large contingent made the 45-minute trip from Dufort's hometown of Smiths Falls, Ont., to watch the industrial relations senior play his final collegiate game in Kingston.
The 6-foot-7, 233-pound centre added three assists, one steal and shot 5-for-9 from the floor.
A trio of McGill veterans fouled out, including Daoust, who only had 15 minutes of playing time, Dufort and power forward
Francois Bourque.
"Our defence was a little rusty and we gave up too many threes in the first quarter, when they shot 4-for-6 but they didn't make another three the rest of the way," said McGill head coach
David DeAveiro, whose bench outscored the Queen's subs 27-16. "We got into foul trouble… Today was a good example of our depth, which really came through. We needed that because their top two scorers were making shots."
Both of them reached double figures for the Gaels, with
Sukhpreet Singh collecting 19 and
Mike Shoveller adding 11.
McGill held a 43-35 edge in rebounding and an impressive 18-9 advantage in turnovers with a 5-4 margin in steals.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Jawara Pedican (9),
Francois Bourque (7),
Sebastian Beckett (6),
Dele Ogundokun (4),
Isaiah Cummins (4) and
Tychon Carter-Newman (3).
The Redmen shot 34.2 per cent from the field (27/79), 22.6 from three-point range (7/31) and drained nine of 14 from the line. Queen's shot 42.6 (23/54), sank four of 17 treys and dropped 11 of 21 from the line.
"We were in such good shape before the holiday break but struggled a bit trying to find a rhythm and our conditioning today," added DeAveiro. "We were a little banged up before the break and needed the time off. Queen's is a very tough opponent, especially on their home court. But we want and need games like that."
The Gaels, who dropped to 10-5 overall resume their OUA schedule with a 6-1 record on Jan. 15 at Toronto (2-4)..
McGill, which improved to 11-1 against CIS opponents overall, resumes regular-season action on Jan. 16 when they put their unblemished 4-0 RSEQ record against second-place Laval (3-3) in the back-end of a doubleheader.
