Suchorski scores nine points but rugby Martlets fall to undefeated Stingers

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que -- Caroline Suchorski of Kirkland, Que., scored a game-high nine points for McGill but it was insufficient as five players replied with tries for Concordia in a 29-14 road victory over the Martlets in RSEQ women's rugby at McEwen Field, Wednesday.

It was the third straight win for a veteran Stingers squad, which improved to 3-0 atop the eight-team Quebec conference. McGill, which featured seven freshmen on their 25-member dresslist, saw their record tumble to 1-2.

McGill opened the scoring in just the second minute of play when senior Deanna Foster, a speedy 5-foot-8 fullback from Caledon, Ont., broke through for a try, which was converted by Suchorski.

Concordia rallied with three consecutive tries, from Jasmine AkkermansLaura Read and Emily Hickson to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The upstart Martlets again came out of the break and scored another early try in the second minute of the final stanza with Suchorski tallying both the try and subsequent conversion, narrowing the gap to 17-14. The fifth-year science senior now leads the Martlets in scoring with 26 points in three games.

Alexandra Tessier and Frederique Rajotte replied with tries for Concordia in the 58th and 75th minute, respectively, to put the game out of reach.  Rounding out the scoring for the Stingers was Alexandra Ste. Marie who connected on two of her five conversion attempts.

Up next for McGill (1-2) is a road game against the Montreal Carabins (2-0) at Terrain Vincent d'Indy on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. Concordia (3-0) travels to Ottawa (2-0) for their lone meeting against the defending conference champion Gee-Gees. Because of the short seven-game regular season, this much-anticipated first-place showdown between two powerhouses will almost certainly decide which team will finish first.
