Box Score
MONTREAL -- Jordan Jackson, a freshman from Houston, Texas, scored a game-high 11 points as the visiting Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated McGill University 54-46 in a cross-border men's preseason confrontation between NCAA and CIS basketball teams at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.

It was the opener of a four-game excursion to Canada for Texas Tech, an NCAA Div. 1 squad from Lubbock, Texas, that plays in the Big 12 Conference.

Dele Ogundokun, a junior from Hamilton, Ont., and junior Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., tallied seven points apiece to lead the Redmen, who dropped to 0-2 against NCAA opponents. Ogundokun, who shot 3-for-12, also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three steals and one blocked shot in a game-high 30 minutes of court time.

Teammates Noah Daoust and Vincent Dufort added six and five points, respectively.

The lead changed hands seven times, with McGill going ahead on three occasions. Texas Tech led 14-13 after the opening quarter, 27-23 at the half and 46-47 after three. McGill outscored the visitors 9-8 in a defensive-minded fourth quarter.

The Red Raiders had a decided edge in shooting, making 20 of 60 attempts from the field (33.3 per cent), including 1-for-9 from three-point range. They went to the free-throw line 23 times and came away with 13 freebies.

"We had opportunities to make open shots but didn't make them," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro, who departs Monday for a week-long training camp in Toronto with the Canadian national team."You have those nights where you make the shots and other nights when you don't. And when it's not working, you have to find other ways to win."

McGill, which had a big 42-33 edge in rebounding, only made eight trips to the line and cashed in just four times. They shot a disappointing 25.4 per cent from the floor (18 of 71) and went 6-for-26 from beyond the arc (23.1).

"Overall, I'm fairly pleased with the way we played in our two games this week," noted DeAveiro, in his sixth season at the helm. "Our kids competed and played hard against some good NCAA competition. It's August and we've only had seven practices. I thought that we played well for three-quarters of the game against Valparaiso (an 80-60 loss on Aug. 11) and had three-and-a-half good quarters today. So it's coming along.".

Texas Tech held an 8-6 margin in blocked shots and a 10-8 difference in steals. They committed 19 miscues to McGill's 24, which created a 22-11 advantage in points off tunovers.

Both teams substututed heavily, with all 13 players seeing action on both sides. Eleven members of the Red Raiders and 10 Redmen found the scoresheet.

The Redmen coaching staff will hold open tryouts on Sept. 8, before resuming their normal training camp on Sept. 9. Next on their preseason schedule is a prolonged road trip to Toronto, McMaster, and Ryerson, Oct. 2-3-4, respectively.

The NCAA allows teams to participate in foreign tours once every four years. Texas Tech play Laval in Quebec City on Monday, followed by games at Carleton (Wednesday) and Ottawa (Thursday).

REDMEN RAP: The McGill training camp roster is currently at 16 players, with two more players expected to report when classes begin in September -- Tychon Carter-Newman, a 6-foot-3 guard from Brampton, Ont., who played four years of CIS ball in the OUA conference for Laurentian; and freshman Leon van den Berghe, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard out of Appleby College, who hails from Belgium.
