Box Score MONTREAL –
Mukiya Post, a fifth-year guard from Victoria, B.C., scored a team-high 12 points to help Concordia upset the first-place McGill Redmen 51-44 in an ugly college hoops affair at the Loyola campus gym, Saturday.
The win catapulted Concordia (6-6) into a three-way tie for second place in the RSEQ conference. The Redmen (8-4), who have now dropped two out of their last three, are only four points ahead of Concordia, Bishop's and Laval each trying to chase down the reigning back-to-back RSEQ champions.
It was a sloppy game that featured a combined 81 missed field-goals, 29 turnovers and 12 lead changes.
McGill had a slight 14-13 advantage after the opening quarter. Nothing much changed in the second stanza as both teams put up 10 points apiece giving McGill a 24-23 lead into halftime. After the break Concordia took advantage of a dismal third quarter by the Redmen, outscoring them 14-6 to take a 37-30 margin going into the final frame. Both teams tallied 14 points in the fourth.
Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds and had three blocks but the Stingers had a 16-13 advantage in turnovers, largely from a 10-5 margin in steals
For McGill, sophomore
Regis Ivaniukas of Oakville, Ont., led the way for the second straight night, scoring a dozen points off the bench. He was 4 of 11 from the floor, including one from long range and added a 3-for-5 performance from the charity stripe.
Francois Bourque, a 6-foot-5 forward from Terrebonne, Que., was the only other Redmen to reach double-digits with 13 points. He went 5-for-11 from the field, 3-for-3 from the line and snagged six rebounds.
McGill, which has now struggled offensively over a three-game stretch, saw nothing new tonight. They shot just 23 per cent from the floor (14/61), 15.4 from the three-point arc (4/26) and made 12 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Key starters
Vincent Dufort and
Dele Ogundokun, were effectively shut down, going a combined for a 0-for-17 from the field.
Michael Peterkin and
Jenning Leung, two other starters, were held to just five and two points, respectively.
The Stingers shot 38.2 from the field and 23.5 from the arc, while draining 5 of 9 from the line.
McGill's schedule does not get any easier as they now have to travel to Lennoxville, Que., on Valentine's Day to take on a hungry second-place Bishop's (6-6) squad looking to inch closer to the top of the RSEQ standings. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on
Gaiters TV.
