BALTIMORE - Jarred Jones scored 15 points as the Loyola University Maryland men's basketball cruised to a 72-48 victory over McGill Thursday night in a men's basketball cross-border exhibition confrontation between CIS and NCAA Div. 1 teams.
The game was a rematch of one from August 2014 when McGill hosted Loyola in Montreal during the Greyhounds' Canadian tour. Loyola won that matchup, 65-60.
McGill scored the game's first two points but the Greyhounds went on a 16-0 run and never looked back. They led 44-22 at halftime, then edged the Redmen 28-26 in the second half.
Tyler Hubbard was the only other member of the Greyhounds to reach double figures, with 14 points in just 10 minutes of court-time.
Jenning Leung led the Redmen with eight points, primarily on a 2-for-4 performance from three-point range. Teammates Sebastian Beckett and Daniel Pieper both came off the bench to score seven and six points, respectively.
McGill held a 46-33 edge in rebounding but the Greyhounds had the advantage in turnovers (23-16), steals (11-5) and blocked shots (4-3).
The Redmen had a difficult time adjusting to the Reitz Arena court, shooting just 26.8 per cent from the field (15/56), 26.9 from beyond the arc (7/26) and a tepid 45.8 from the free-throw line (11/24). Loyola shot 49.1, 58.3 and 59.1, respectively.
Loyola opens regular season play in the Patriot League on Nov. 13 when they host Tennessee State.
McGill, which dropped to 7-4 overall, including an 0-3 mark against NCAA squads, plays Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live and available on the Ivy League Digital Network for a day-pass subscription rate of $10 (U.S.). There is no charge to watch the Live stats platform.
