Sylla collects "double-double", causes Stingers lots of trouble

MONTREAL -- Mariam Sylla registered a monstrous "double-double", posting game-highs with 19 points and 15 rebounds as the No.2-ranked McGill women's basketball team defeated visiting Concordia 59-54 before a noisy crowd of 608 at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

It was the eighth straight win for the Martlets, improved McGill's record to 3-0 in league play and was the team's 17th victory in the last 24 meetings against the cross-town rival Stingers, including a current five-game win streak.

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward from Guinea and a two-time defending RSEQ player of the year, had 33 minutes of court-time and shot 5-for-12 from the field, including an impressive 9-for-11 effort from the foul-line.

McGill got off to a good start, led 14-7 after the opening quarter and continued the strong play in the second to take a 31-17 lead into halftime. After the break, however, Concordia clawed their way back into the contest, outscoring the Martlets 21-10 in the third stanza. The Stingers stayed in contention in the fourth -- which McGill won 18-16 -- but it was too little, too late.

Concordia, which used a short bench, only had six players getting significant court time. Their five starters -- Richelle GregoireMarilyse Roy-Viau, former McGill player Marie-Eve Martin, Shanica Baker and Tamara Pinard-Devos -- each had over 30 minutes of playing time.  Roy-Viau and Gregoire led the Stingers in scoring with 16 points apiece. Martin made a bittersweet return to her old gymnasium where she played three seasons for the Martlets from 2009 to 2012. The 5-foot-7 court-general played the entire 40 minutes and pitched in eight points, three assists, three rebounds and one steal.

By contrast, 11 members of the Martlets saw the court, including nine who reached double-digits in minutes played. No other McGill player reached double figures in scoring but Dianna Ros and Alex Kiss-Rusk did their part, contributing nine and eight points, respectively.

Also making a return to her old stomping ground was new Stingers bench boss Tenicha Gittens, who once served as an assistant coach to McGill's Ryan Thorne from 2009 to 2011. Gittens was assessed one of two technical fouls called on Concordia. The technicals -- rarely seen in women's hoops -- proved costly in a game that ended in a five-point spread, and resulted in four points for McGill, as well as erasing two possessions from the Stingers.

McGill had a 39-24 edge in rebounds but lost the turnover battle 22-13.

The Martlets shot 32.5 per cent from the floor (19/52) which included a 7-for-18 performance from downtown. The were solid from the free-throw line, going 14-for-18. The Stingers replied with 32.1 per cent in field-goal shooting (18/56), made six of 12 from the arc and went 12-for-22 from the line.

McGill (3-0) will make the short ride across town on Saturday to square off with their other cross-town rival UQAM (2-0). Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. and the game is scheduled to be streamed live on tvgo.ca.
