Citadins rally to shock No. 3 Martlets in college hoops; McGill win streak ends at 8

MONTREAL -- Jessica Lubin scored a game-high 16 points as the UQAM Citadins snapped visiting McGill's eight-game win streak with a 55-48 shocker over the No.2-ranked Martlets in women's basketball at the Centre sportif, Saturday.

McGill appeared to be in cruise-control, leading 13-11 after the first quarter and 27-22 at the intermission. But they were outscored 33-21 the rest of the way, including a 12-5 margin in the final stanza.

Despite a 47-33 edge in rebounds, the Martlets committed 19 turnovers compared to just a dozen by UQAM. That led directly to a 15-4 advantage on the scoreboard.

Lubin was one of three UQAM players to reach double-digits, along with Queteline Celestin (12) and Lorna Desrameaux-Simon (11).

The five McGill starters combined for just 28 points, led by Alex Kiss-Rusk, who posted nine points and eight rebounds. She was matched on the scoresheet by Stephanie Blais, a second-year transfer, who came off the bench to collect nine points.

All-Canadian Mariam Sylla, the queen of the "double-double", was limited to eight points and as many rebounds. Fifth-year point-guard Dianna Ros and highly-touted rookie Gladys Hakizimana each tallied seven.

With the victory, UQAM moved into sole possession of first place in the RSEQ standings with a 3-0 record. The Citadins will close out the fall semester with a road game on Nov. 27 against Laval in Quebec City.

The Martlets, who have finished first in each of the past five seasons, will be left with the bitter taste of looking at UQAM from the wrong side of the standings for the next seven weeks as they are done for the fall semester. The McGill women are slated to return to action on Jan. 14 when they play host to Laval.
