Ros rocks as Martlet hoopsters roll over Gaiters

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Team captain Dianna Ros of Montreal scored a game-high 13 points as the No.3-ranked McGill University women's basketball team waltzed to a 70-44 victory over Bishop's at the Mitchell Gymnasium, Saturday.

The victory, McGill's 12th in a row over the Gaiters and sixth straight against CIS opponents, improved their record to 2-0 tied atop the RSEQ conference with UQAM. The Gaiters, who have been outscored 124-79 to date, fell to 0-2.

McGill came out of the gate fast and found themselves up 19-7 at the end of the first quarter. A similar pace continued in the second stanza as the Marlets scored 18 points to take a 37-15 lead into halftime.  Following the halftime break, Bishop's had their best quarter of the game outscoring McGill 21-15. However, all momentum stopped there, as the Martlets had an 18-8 advantage in the fourth.

Ros, a 5-foot-7 point guard, was 4-for-11 from the floor, including a 2-for-4 performance from downtown. The physical therapy senior also went 3-for-4 at the foul line and was credited with five assists, four rebounds and a steal.

McGill had three other players in double-digit scoring. Gladys Hakizimana, a freshman guard from Montreal, had a dozen points off the bench on a strong 4-of-7 shooting performance. She also went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. Teammate Alex Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre, held her own in the low block, adding 10 points and six rebounds. Freshmen Geraldine Cabillo-Abante matched Kiss-Rusk with 10 points but also contributed two assists and a pair of rebounds

Noemie Hamel-Petit and Edith Noblecilla were the only Gaiters in double-digit scoring with 10 apiece. Noblecilla, a native of Ecuador, also pitched in seven assists and three steals.

McGill shot 44.8 per cent from the field (26/58), went 7-for-18 from three-point range and sank 11 of 14 from the line (78.6). Bishop's made 30.2 per cent of their shots from the floor (13/43) and was  3-for-11 from beyond the arc. They went 15-for-18 from the line.

The Martlets (2-0) will now switch their focus to the heated cross-town rivalry with Concordia (0-2) and will host the Stingers on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. Bishop's (0-2) will host third-place Laval (1-1) on Nov. 21.
