Diressa Ammanuel scored a game-high 18 points as the Ryerson Rams defeated McGill 69-66 in a CIS men's basketball preseason bout at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, Sunday.
VIDEO RECAPIt was the first loss against a CIS opponent for the Redmen, who opened their CIS schedule with a challenging three games in three days road trip to southern Ontario over the weekend and promptly took care of business against Toronto (83-64) and McMaster (62-59), Friday and Saturday. respectively. But they showed signs of tiring against the Rams, who were playing their only contest of the weekend and it produced the first career win against a CIS opponent for new head coach
Roy Rana.
McGill led 24-21 after an impressive opening stanza but had a rough second quarter that ended up being the difference as Ryerson outscored the Redmen 22-6 to take a 43-30 advantage into the intermission. McGill did their best to make it a game in the second half, outscoring the Rams 17-15 and 19-11 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Francois Bourque, a junior forward from Terrebonne, Que., led the way for McGill with another patented "double-double", scoring 17 points and snagging 11 rebounds. He went 5-for-12 from the floor and dropped 7 of 8 from the foul-line.
Teammates
Jenning Leung and
Dele Ogundokun were the only other Redmen to reach double digits in scoring, with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Leung, a 6-foot-1 guard from the Philippines, went 4-for-8 from the field including a 3-for-5 performance from downtown. Ogundokun, an economics and accounting junior, also added six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
McGill, which had a 62-45 edge in rebounds, shot a dreadful 27.8 per cent from the floor (20/72), went 10-for-39 from the arc and only connected on 16 of 29 attempts from the foul-line. The Rams shot 32.4, 21.2 and 78.3, respectively.
Also contributing for Ryerson was
Adika Peter-McNeilly who registered his own double-double, putting home 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Roshane Robers was the final Rams player to reach double figures in scoring as he added 13 off the bench.
Next up for the Redmen is a scrimmage against College Montmorency on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
