Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., scored 17 points as McGill coasted to a 90-67 triumph over York at Montpetit Hall on Day 2 of the Jack Donohue Tip-off Basketball Tournament, Saturday.
McGill led 26-13 after the first quarter, 52-31 at halftime and 75-49 after three.
Bourque, a 6-foot-5, 192-pound forward, shot 5-for-8 from the floor and made 11 trips to the foul-line where he sank seven shots. The economics junior also added three assists, two rebounds, a pair of steals and one blocked shot. He was one of eight players in the game to reach double figures in scoring, including McGill teammates
Jenning Leung (12),
Dele Ogundokun (11) and
Tychon Carter-Newman (11).
Nathan Culbreath led York with 17 points. Others in double digits were
Tommy Hobbs (11),
Gene Spagnuolo (11) and
Shane Reader (10).
McGill, which had a 30-24 edge in rebounding, shot a stellar 54.1 per cent from the field and 37 per cent from three-point range. Seven different Redmen drained treys, led by
Andrew Peterson, a freshmen from New Rochelle, N.Y., who went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
York also shot the ball well going 46.2 per cent from the floor and 14-for-23 from beyond the arc.
The Redmen, 6-1 against CIS oppoents, will meet the host Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-0) in the final round on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be webcast live on OUA.tv.
