King reigns as Redbirds corral Bisons in preseason hoops

Career-high 21 points leads four McGill scorers into double figures in 83-66 win

(VERSION FRANÇAISE SUIT)

MONTREAL — Miles King scored a career-high 21 points as McGill defeated the visiting Manitoba Bisons 83-66 in men's preseason basketball before 312 fans at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

It was McGill's first rendezvous in nine years with the Bisons, since a 63-53 quarter-final win at the Nationals in Halifax on March 9, 2017.

The victory improved McGill's preseason record to 1-1, while Manitoba fell to 0-1. The Redbirds never trailed, leading 22-14 after the opening quarter and 37-29 at halftime before breaking the game open with a 23-15 advantage in the third.

"We're a young team and it showed," said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. "There were times when you saw some really good stuff, and then you saw some inexperience. That's where some of the runs in the game came from."

King, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Montreal, surpassed his previous career best of 16 points, established during his freshman season. He shot a sizzling 8-for-11 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from three-point range, and added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 29 minutes.

"He's a scorer," Thorne said. "When he gets good looks, he's going to make them. We have to make sure he doesn't have to take tough shots and look for him within the flow of the game so he gets easier shots."

Thorne described King's shooting struggles (4-for-16) in McGill's preseason opener against UNB as "an anomaly."

"He's a guy we expect to make a lot of shots," he added.

King was one of four Redbirds to reach double figures. Sophomore Sean Duff and senior Saransh Padhy contributed 15 points apiece, while junior Alexandre Reinert-Woodfine came off the bench to score 11.

Padhy registered the game's only double-double, adding a game-high 10 rebounds to his 15 points. He shot 5-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line while adding two assists, one blocked shot and a steal.

"Saransh is a fourth-year guy on our team, so we're going to play through him," Thorne said. "If we have shooters around him and he makes good decisions, we'll be in good shape."

McGill shot 43.7 per cent from the floor, making 31 of 71 attempts, compared with 33.3 per cent for Manitoba. The Redbirds also held a sizeable advantage from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-for-21 for 38.1 per cent, while the Bisons managed just 4-for-24 for 16.7 per cent.

"We've got shooters," Thorne said. "If we do a good job moving the ball and getting open shots, we're going to get good results."

But the McGill bench boss was more interested in his team's performance at the other end of the court.

"I'm more concerned about our defence," he said. "Our focus is on being a better defensive team than we were last year, and I think it showed in the first two games. If we can keep teams under 60, we're in a great situation."

After the teams played an even 15-15 second quarter, McGill took control after halftime. The Redbirds shot 47.1 per cent in the third stanza, including 3-for-5 from three-point range, and outscored Manitoba 23-15 to take a 60-44 lead into the fourth. King accounted for eight points in the quarter without missing a shot.

McGill stretched its advantage to a game-high 20 points early in the final period before Manitoba trimmed the deficit to nine. The Redbirds answered down the stretch and shot 61.5 per cent in the fourth quarter en route to the 17-point victory.

Samuel Desrochers and Brandt Lenz paced Manitoba with 12 points apiece, while Ramogi Nyagudi added 11. Jonam Kazadi pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with six points.

The Bisons held a narrow 36-35 edge in rebounding and outscored McGill 40-34 in the paint. McGill countered by forcing 16 turnovers and registering 13 steals. The Redbirds committed 19 turnovers of their own.

Manitoba continues its Quebec preseason swing against UQAM on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. McGill returns to Love Competition Hall the same day to host Queen's at 3 p.m.

McGill a toutefois commis 19 revirements.
