Francois Bourque of Terrebonne, Que., led all scorers with 18 points as McGill defeated the McMaster Marauders 62-59 in men's preseason basketball, Saturday.
The Redmen trailed 22-17 after the opening quarter but used a strong second stanza to take a 35-31 lead into half. McMaster however, returned the favour and went on their own run to start the third, regaining the lead 49-47 going into the forth. The lead went back and forth in the final frame until some late free throws by McGill provided the margin of victory.
Neither team had a good day shooting the ball. McGill shot 31.7 per cent from the field (19/60), 35.3 from three-point range (6/17) and 81.8 from the line (18/22). Meanwhile, the Marauders shot 40, 14.3 and 54.3, respectively.
Bourque, an economics junior and reigning RSEQ player of the year, connected on 5 of 8 attempts from the floor including one long range bomb and went a cool 7-for-7 from the foul-line. He also added nine rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Fellow junior
Jenning Leung was the only other Redmen to reach double-digit figures in scoring. He tallied 11 points while kicking in four assists, two rebounds and one steal. Also contributing was
Michael Peterkin who came off the bench to score nine and
Dele Ogundokun who pitched in seven points and seven steals.
Four players managed to reach double digit scoring in what was a balanced attack for McMaster. Their top scorer was
Troy Joseph with 15, while
Leon Alexander added 13, followed by
Aaron Redpath and
Adam Presutti, both of whom chipped in 10 points.
McGill (2-2) will now make a short trip back to Toronto to take on Ryerson (1-0) tomorrow at 2 p.m., while McMaster (1-1) will turn their attention towards Redeemer College in Lancaster, Ont., on Oct. 7 and Dalhousie (1-0) on Oct. 10.
