MONTREAL –
Jawara Pedican of Vaughn, Ont., scored a game-high 20 points as McGill overwhelmed the Waterloo Warriors 108-56 at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. It marked the first time in 36 games -- and the second occurrence in 160 contests -- that McGill has reached the century mark in scoring, dating back to a 101-78 victory over Guelph on Oct. 4, 2014. Prior to that, it last happened in a 102-88 conquest over Bishop's on Nov. 20, 2009.
Pedican, a physical education sophomore, shot 5-for-14 in the game, hitting an impressive four of five trey attempts. The six-foot, 178-pound shooting guard was also 6-for-6 from the foul-line and was credited with five rebounds, four steals and one assist.
"Jawara was kind of thrown into a starting role this season," said head coach
David DeAveiro, who reached the century mark in wins behind the McGill bench, upping his record to 100-77 since joining the Redmen in 2010. "For someone that didn't play much last year it took him some time to adjust but he is finally becoming comfortable in that role."
The Redmen, who had a 46-24 advantage in rebounding, managed to reach the 30-point plateau in three different quarters. They led 30-8 after the opening stanza, then outscored Waterloo 17-14 in the second to take a 47-22 advantage into the intermission. McGill continued to cruise after the break outscoring the Warriors 30-19 in the third and 31-15 in the final quarter.
Pedican was one of six Redmen to reach double figures in scoring.
Vincent Dufort, a team captain from Smiths Falls, Ont., chipped in with 14 points, while
Andrew Perterson, a freshman from New Rochelle, NY., added 13. Teammates
Jenning Leung,
Francois Bourque and
Noah Daoust each scored 10 apiece.
Leading the way for the Warriors was
Ben Davis with 13 points.
"We shot the ball incredibly well tonight," noted DeAveiro, whose troops converted a stellar 49.4 per cent of their attempts from the floor (40/81), in addition to an unbelievable 54.2 from three-point range (13/24) and 83.3 per cent from the free-throw line (15/18). "I think our flow on offence resulted directly from our effort and energy on defense. We were able to get in a rhythm and find confidence by bring intensity to that side of the floor first." The Redmen had 32 points off 25 Waterloo turnovers.
The Warriors shot 37.5 per cent from the field (24/64), 15.8 from the arc (3/19) and 71.4 from the line (5/7).
McGill now sits at 4-1 versus CIS opponents will make a trip to the nation's capital on Oct. 30 to battle in the Ottawa Invitational tournament. They will take on UNB, York and Ottawa, respectively, in the three-day tourney.
