Box Score MONTREAL -- Fuelled by a game-high 17 points from freshman
Gladys Hakizimana and a strong second-half team performance, McGill cruised to a 79-55 victory over Thompson Rivers University on Day 2 to remain undefeated at the Redbird Classic women's basketball tournament in Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
In the earlier game, Victoria defated Lauier 80-59 as both those teams evened their tourney record at 1-1.
McGill trailed 22-19 after the first quarter before settling down and outplaying the WolfPack to take a 39-33 halftime lead. The Martlets remained hot over the last two quarters, outscoring TRU 40-22.
Hakizimana, a Montreal native and reigning collegiate player of the year at the CCAA level, came off the bench and was lights out from the field, going 7-for-9, including a 3-for-5 performance from downtown.
Teammate
Mariam Sylla, a senior forward from Guinea, also impressed, posting 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and a steal. She was 5-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the charity stripe.
The rest of McGill's scoring was spread out as an impressive 11 players got on the board.
Dianna Ros was the final Martlet to reach double digits with 11 points while
Jennifer Silver and
Alex Kiss-Rusk added nine and eight points, respectively. Rounding out the scoring was

Marika Guerin (3),
Stephanie Guinois-Cote (2) and
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante (2).
Leading the way for the WolfPack was the trio of
Michelle Bos,
Taiysa Worsfold and
Emma Piggin who had 17, 13 and 11 points, respectively.
McGill shot 42.5 per cent from the floor (31/73), 32.3 from three-point range (10/31) and dropped seven of 11 free-throws.
The Martlets were extremely impressive on the defensive end holding Thompson Rivers to 34.5 per cent shooting from the field, which included a rough 6-for-30 performance in the second half. McGill also managed to force 17 turnovers, six of which were steals. The WolfPack shot 40 per cent (6/15) from downtown and knocked down 11 of 16 free-throws.
McGill, which improved to 2-0 over the weekend, can win their own tourney for the third straight year with a victory against Laurier (0-2) on Sunday at 12 noon.
