Gee-Gees get best of rugby Martlets on rainy day

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- Courtney Mastine and Irene Patrinos each scored unconverted first-half tries as the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees doubled McGill 10-5 in women's rugby on a rainy pitch at McEwen Field, Sunday.

Trailing 10-0 on the last play of the first half, Milda Sabiston, a mechanical engineering from Mississauga, Ont., replied with a try for the Martlets.

The players of the game, as selected by the coaches, were McGill's Kayleigh Walsh, a master's student from Montreal, and Ottawa's Simone Savary.

"It was a very physical game in difficult conditions," said McGill assistant coach Matt de Graff. "Both teams tackled extremely well and our defence was much-improved. Ottawa managed two quick scores early and they were able to hang on despite massive pressure by our side in the final minute. The game ended right on their goal line and was indicative of how tight it was played."

The upstart Gee-Gees improved to 4-0 and now share first place with Concordia (4-0) in the eight-team RSEQ conference. The divison lead should be decided after a key match-up with the Stingers on Sept. 28.

With three games remaining before post-season play, the McGill (1-3-1) women sit precariously in danger of missing the playoffs. The Martlets are currently on the outside, looking in, tied for fifth with Carleton (1-3-0) and Sherbrooke (1-3-1). McGill's remaining contests on the schedule include a road game at last-place Bishop's (0-4-0) on Sept. 26, followed by a must-win home game against the fourth-place Montreal Carabins (2-2-0) at Molson Stadium on Oct. 4. They close out the schedule on Oct. 10 with a home game against Sherbrooke (1-3-0) at the McEwen pitch in suburban Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que.
