OTTAWA – Caroline Suchorski of Kirkland, Que., scored 19 points while leading the McGill University women's rugby team to a lopsided season-opening 54-27 conquest at Carleton's Raven Field, Monday.

Suchorski, a 5-foot-8 inside centre majoring in dietetics, scored one try, added seven conversions and was selected by the Carleton coaching staff as McGill's player of the game.

"Our team is still a work in progress," said Matthew Stephens, in his second season as head coach of the Martlets. "I was happy with some of the individual efforts but we have to do a better job of sustaining pressure as a team. Our defence also has to be more organized and aggressive."

Veterans Emily Barber of Fenelon Falls, Ont., and Bianca Della Porta of Dorval, Que., each added a pair of tries for the Martlets, who led 33-5 at halftime. They were among six different try scorers for the defending RSEQ champs.

Rounding out the McGill scoring, with single tries apiece, were seniors Marie-Helene Laforest of Montreal and Milda Sabiston of Mississauga, Ont., along with freshman Carla Massaro, also a Montrealer.

Try scorers for the Ravens included Olivia Merritt (2), Ingrid Kravsbar, Natasha Smith and Melanie Michaud, while Bailey Dean added one conversion.

Carleton (0-1) will host Concordia (0-0) on Sept. 6. McGill (1-0), which upset the first-place Stingers in the conference final last year, will play at Concordia on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.

MARTLET MURMURS:  The McGill coaching staff received some devastating news last week. Deanna Foster, a 5-foot-8 fullback from Caledon, Ont., who helped Canada win gold at the FISU rugby sevens world championship in Brazil last month, will miss the entire collegiate season. The 20-year-old political science junior suffered a torn ACL in her knee while playing for the national under-20 team against the USA in a Can-Am tournament in London, Aug. 20-23. "Pretty bad timing as I was so looking forward to playing this season," said Foster. "But I've got my surgery booked and am optimistic for a quick recovery."
