Mariam Sylla posted a game-high 20 points as the No.8-ranked McGill women's basketball team earned a hard fought 65-56 road win over UQAM at the Centre Sportif, Saturday.
The victory moved the Martlets into sole possession of first place in the RSEQ conference with a 10-2 record, two points up on cross-town rival Concordia (9-3). UQAM, which had a chance to shake up the standings this weekend with a back-to-back set against McGill, failed to take advantage losing both games and now find themselves in third place with a 7-5 mark.
The Citadins, who lost 62-56 at McGill on Thursday, came out strong and held a 21-16 lead after the opening quarter. McGill however, rallied to outscore UQAM 20-6 in the second stanza and take a 36-27 halftime lead. Both teams put up 29 points apiece over the second half.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre from Guinea, shot 7-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-12 from the foul-line. The pharmacology sophomore was also credited with seven rebounds, a pair of steals and one assist.
Two other Martlets reached double-digit figures.
Francoise Charest, a senior guard from Quebec City, scored 11 points and also dished out four assists while collecting three rebounds. Helen Bibeau, a six-foot forward from St. Bruno, Que., tallied 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Freshman
Jennifer Silver, a 5-foot-11 forward from Montreal, added nine points off the bench, with a 3-for-5 shooting performance from the floor and a 3-for-4 mark from the foul-line.
Queteline Celestin lead the way for the Citadins with 14 points on a played a game-high 38 minutes. She added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Camille Michaud also reached double figures, putting up a dozen points and grabbing eight boards.
The game featured a plethora of turnovers as both teams combined for 56. McGill committed 27 miscues, seven of which were UQAM steals. The Citadins on the other hand coughed up 29 turnovers, 11 of which were Martlet steals.
McGill shot 44.4 per cent from the field (20/45), went 2-for-4 from three-point range and sank 23 of 32 from the line (71.9%). UQAM connected on 46 per cent from the floor (23/50) and 2-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Martlets have a four-day break before hosting fourth-place Laval (4-8) on Thursday (Feb.13) at 6.p.m. That same night, UQAM will try to get back in the win column when they travel across town to take on second-place Concordia (8-3).
