MONTREAL -- Senior Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., posted his second consecutive "double-double" to lead No.8-ranked McGill to an easy 90-72 victory over the visiting UQAM Citadins in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

The division-leading Redmen improved to 9-2 on the season, while the cellar-dwelling Citadins sunk to 2-9.

McGill, which has developed a habit of torrid opening quarters this season, racked up a 28-10 lead after the first frame. It marked the fifth time in 11 contests that the Redmen have reached the 20-point plateau in the opening stanza..

McGill cooled off slightly in the second quarter taking a 42-30 lead into the locker room. UQAM took advantage of McGill's liberal substitutions and came out to battle in the second half. They outscored the Redmen 30-25 in the third and narrowed the gap to 67-62 early in the fourth before McGill moved back in high gear.

"We knew we were going to be in a dog fight until the end," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. "They are fighting for the last playoff spot and they competed for four full quarters."

Dufort led all Redmen with 24 points on a lights-out 9-of-12 shooting performance, including perfect marks from downtown (2/2) and the charity stripe (4/4). He also snagged 11 rebounds and dished out four assists.

Three other Redmen managed to reach double figures as well. Dele Ogundokun, a 6-foot-3 guard from Hamilton, Ont., continued his strong freshman campaign scoring a dozen points along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Michael Peterkin, another rookie who hails from Toronto, added 11 points while Thomas Lacy, a sophomore guard from Vermont, had 10.

Overall McGill shot a brilliant 58.6 per cent from the field (34/58), including a 9-for-20 performance from downtown. They drained 13 of 17 from the foul line.

The Citadins shot 39 per cent from the floor (23/59) and 5 of 17 from three-point range (29.4%) but sunk 21 of 27 from the charity stripe (77.8%).

UQAM was led by Alexandre Bernard, who scored an impressive 30 points in a losing cause, 13 of them coming from the foul line where he had 17 attempts. "Bernard is a physical player and he is smart. He will draw you into a lot of fouls," noted DeAveiro.

Teammate Richard Addai contributed 23 points.

The same teams will square off again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at UQAM's Centre Sportif in a contest that is slated to be streamed live via a link In the "Upcoming Events" section of the McGill Athletics website.
