LENNOXVILLE, Que. --
Vincent Dufort posted a game-high 25-point performance as the seventh-ranked McGill University men's basketball squad clinched the Quebec regular season pennant for the second straight year with a 69-63 road win at Bishop's in the Mitchell gymnasium, Friday.
The win also gave McGill a four-game sweep over the Gaiters and extending their domination of Bishop's to seven straight games since a 56-42 loss in Lennoxville, Jan. 30, 2013.
Dufort, a 6-foot-4 forward from Smiths Falls, Ont., was lights-out from the field, going 8-for-13 including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. The 21-year-old physical education junior also went 5-for-6 from the foul-line and was credited with seven rebounds, one assist and a steal.
"My hat goes off to "Vinny", playing 35 minutes, bringing the ball up and defending," said Redmen head coach
David DeVeiro, who empasized that his co-captain contributes much more than just shooting. "Vince was spectacular and kind of proves to everyone why I think he is the MVP of the league."
It was a classic grind-it-out road victory for the Redmen. They found themselves down 17-16 after the opening frame before taking a slim 32-30 advantage into the break. After halftime McGill turned it up a notch, outscoring Bishop's 18-10 in the third. They took their largest lead, going ahed by 11 points with eight minutes remaining. The Gaiters rallied to make it close down the stretch but a key offensive rebound by
Rodrigo Imperador secured the victory for the Redmen.
"Rod was very good today," noted DeVeiro of his 6-foot-4 junior from Brazil, who finished the game with eight points and six rebounds off the bench."He played like a veteran and was the key guy off the bench, hitting shots and grabbing boards when we needed them."
A sizeable Bishop's crowd was muted as McGill used big shots and steady defence to control the game.
"I am extremely proud of our group to come in here after playing last night and play a team as good as Bishop's in their gym, in this kind of environment; it is a tough thing to do," added DeVerio. "We hit some timely shots. Every time they went on a run, we hit a big shot. Our defence was also consistent. When we couldn't score we got some big stops which helped control the momentum."
Simon Bibeau, a senior guard from St. Bruno, Que., was the only other Redmen to join Dufort in double digits with 11 points. Rookies
Dele Ogundokun and
Thomas Lacy each chipped in with nine points apiece.
McGill had another great shooting night, hitting 49 per cent from the field (25/51), including an 8-for-15 performance from downtown. They did however, struggle from the line, hitting only 11 of 20 attempts. The Gaiters shot an identical 49 per cent from the floor (24/49). They went 4-for-10 from three-point range and 11-for-15 from the charity stripe.
BU had balance scoring getting 16 points from Onnex Blackwood, 14 points from Mike Andrews and 12 points from Scott Ring.
Bishop's (8-5) will battle last-place UQAM (2-11) on the road this Sunday afternoon. After back-to-back games, the Redmen have a five-day reprieve before hosting the Citadins on Thursday (Feb.20) at 8.p.m.
