MONTREAL – Dele Ogundokun and Jenning Leung each scored a game-high 14 points as McGill dumped Concordia 64-41 in men's university basketball before a season-high crowd of 540 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
 
Whenever these bitter rivals cross paths, there always seems to be a feeling that something unusual is going to happen and this game was no different.
 
Four players were ejected -- three of the disqualifications were assessed to Concordia -- after a minor skirmish broke out between McGill's Francois Bourque and Concordia players Michael Fosu and Xander Jean with just under four minutes left in the contest. Jonathan Mirambeau, another Stinger who had dressed for the pre-game warm-up but was not part of their 12-man dress roster listed on the official scoresheet, jumped off the bench to join the melee. All could face suspensions pending a league review.
 
"It was a tough game. Both teams competed real hard and sometimes, arms get tangled and legs get tangled up and no doubt, some of the kids lose their temper a little bit in those circumstances," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. "We just have to do a better job as coaches to control those young guys."
 
The teams were tied at 11-11 after the opening quarter but McGill pulled away for the remainder of the game, opening a 23-17 lead at the half, a 39-28 advantage heading into the final stanza and eventually a 26-point spread as the final minutes ticked down.
 
"Their aggressive defence gave us a lot of problems in the first half.  We couldn't score, couldn't run our (planned) offence because they were playing some solid defence on our guys. So we made a small adjustment at halftime, just to be more assertive, to move the ball a little quicker and we were successful in doing that.
 
"It was also nice that we had a real good crowd tonight," noted DeAveiro. "It was loud and the atmosphere was good. It really helps us when we're playing at home to have that kind of atmosphere in our gym. The guys play better in that environment."
 
Ogundokun shot 4-for-9 from the floor, including a 2-for-5 effort from downtown. He led all McGill players with 32 minutes of court-time, dropped four of seven free-throw attempts, pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, was credited with a pair of steals, one blocked shot and even had an assist.
 
Two other Redmen, namely starter Michael Peterkin and substitute Rodrigo Imperador, just missed double digits with nine points apiece. Captain Vincent Dufort, usually the team's leading scorer, was limited to just seven points
 
Mukiya Post led the Stingers with 13 points off the bench.
 
McGill shot 36.1 per cent from the floor (22/61) and 41.2 from trey-land (7/17) but continued to struggle at the free-throw line, where they sank just 13 of 25. After three league contests, they have only made 30 of 60 attempts from the charity stripe.
 
Concordia shot a paltry 26.2 per cent from the floor (16/61), went 3-for-16 from the arc and 6-for-10 from the line.
 
The Stingers (1-2) will close out their semester on Nov. 27, when they host winless UQAM (0-2). McGill (2-1) plays at Laval (1-2) on Nov. 28
