MONTREAL --
Caroline Suchorski of Kirkland, Que, was a one-woman show with 18 points, including the game-winning penalty kick with four minutes remaining as McGill came from behind to edge out their crosstown rival Montreal Carabins 23-21 in a rare downtown appearance at before a crowd of 506 at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
It was a must-win affair for the Martlets, who jumped into a 20-7 lead, then watched in horror as the Carabins rallied with a pair of late tries, just one minute apart, to take a 21-20 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. The victory all but clinched the final playoff berth for McGill, ahead of the Carabins, in the eight-team RSEQ conference.
Suchorski, a 5-foot-8 science senior, tallied one try, a pair of conversions and added three penalty kicks. The offensive outburst moved her into sole possession of first place among the league scoring leaders with 78 points in six games, seven more than Laval's
Anne-Charlotte Beaulieu.
After Suchorski had opened the scoring on a penalty kick,
Emily Barber, a senior from Fenelon Falls, Ont., added her seventh try of the season -- the third-highest total in the league -- to give the Martlets a 10-0 halftime lead.
The Carabins answered that seven minutes into the second-half when
Frederique Crete blocked a kick and recoved the ball for a try, converted by
Molly Dussault. Suchorski replied with a try and made the conversion just four minutes later to put the Martlets ahead 17-7. She added her second penalty kicks in the 68th minute to give McGill a commanding 20-7 lead.
But the Carabins came to life when by
Anapier Berube and
Sabrina Neveu scored back-to-back tries, in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, respectively. Dussault made both conversions to give Montreal their first lead of the game with seven minutes left on the clock, setting the stage for Suchorski's winning kick.
McGill, which evened their record at 3-3, is tied with Montreal (3-3) for the final post-season berth but own the all important tie-breaker over Montreal by virtue of the win in their only head-to-head meeting. With one game remaining on the schedule, in order to qualify for post-season play, the Carabins would have to upset second-place Laval (4-1) at Quebec City in their final game (Oct. 12) and hope that McGill drops their home-field matchup with seventh-place Sherbrooke (1-4) on Oct. 11 at McGill usual home field at their Macdonald campus in suburban Ste. Anne de Bellevue,
