KINGSTON, Ont. -- Thomas Lacy of Jericho, Vt., tied a McGill single-game record for long distance field-goals made en route to scoring 23 points as McGill overwhelmed the Guelph Gryphons 101-78 on Day 2 of the Frank Tindall basketball tournament at the ARC Gymnasium on the campus of Queen's University, Saturday.

It marked the first time in 124 games that McGill had reached the century mark in scoring, dating back to a 102-88 conquest over Bishop's on Nov. 20, 2009.

Lacy, an elementary education junior, shot 8-for-12 in the game, hitting an impressive seven of nine three-point attempts. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound shooting guard was also credited with three rebounds, and a pair of assists while earning a game-high 29 minutes of court time. His three-point tally equalled the school standard held by Yannick Chouinard, who accomplished the feat on two occasions: going 7-for-11 in a 66-61 exhibition loss to Dalhousie on Dec. 29, 2005 and posting a 7-for-9 effort in an 87-79 exhibition win over Ryerson, Dec. 29, 2007.

"Tom has put a lot of hard work into his shot and he is seeing the rewards of that," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. "Our offence is kind of geared to give shooters like Tom some open looks (at the basket) and he was able to knock those down tonight."

The Redmen, who had a 38-23 advantage in rebounding, accomplished a rare feat by reaching the 20-point plateau in all four quarters. They led 28-17 after the opening stanza, then outscored Guelph 29-14 in the second to take a 57-31 advantage into the intermission. McGill was outscored 24-20 in the third and had a slight 24-23 edge in the final quarter.

The game got physical as Guelph tried to claw their way back into it, with Andrew Grant of the Gryphons and Jeremie Casavant-Dubois of the Redmen being assessed technical fouls after a jump ball.

Lacy was one of four Redmen to reach double figures in scoring. Michael Peterkin, a sophomore from Toronto, chipped in with 16 points, while Casavant-Dubois, a freshman from Longueuil, Que., added 15 and a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Francois Bourque had 11 points and matched Casavant-Dubois with six rebounds.

Leading the way for the Gryphons was Trevor Thompson with 16 points.

"We shot the ball incredibly well tonight," said DeAveiro, whose troops converted a stellar 53.3 per cent of their attempts from the floor (32/60), in addiotion to an unbelievable 59.1 from three-point range (13/22) and 75 per cent from the free-throw line (16/22). "I was extremely pleased with our effort in the first half and we ran our offence very well. But we're still learning how to play with a lead and we gave up 47 points in the second half. That's one of the things that w'll have to work on."

Guelph shot 45.5 per cent from the field (25/55), 71.4 from the arc (10/14) and 90.0 from the line (18/20).

In the other game on Day 2, Trinity Western defeated host Queen's 69-60. BOXSCORE

McGill (2-0) will try to make it a perfect weekend in Kingston, closing out the tournament on Sunday at 4 p.m. against the Gaels (1-1). Guelph (0-2) plays Trinity Western (1-1) at 12 noon.
