Box Score MONTREAL -- Tournament MVP
Mariam Sylla posted another one of her patented "double-doubles" as the McGill University women's basketball team toppled Toronto 68-59 to sweep the women's division of the 20th annual Redbird Classic invitational tournament at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
The Martlets had defeated Lakehead 68-51 on Friday, followed by a 73-41 victory over Regina, Saturday.
It marked the team's second Redbird Classic title in as many years. Other recent tourneys wins include the Naismith Classic in 2010, the UNB Helen Campbell Classic in 2007 and Redbird Classic again in 2006.
McGill trailed 16-14 after the first quarter, before exploding in the second frame to take a 37-24 lead at the half. Toronto briefly came back to cut the lead to four after three stanzas and had it within one point midway through the fourth before the Martlets put it away.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 forward from Guinea, was 5-for-12 in field-goals and a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul-line. The 22-year-old pharmacology junior who was recently named among the CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians, was voted to the all-tournament squad in addition to garnering tourney MVP honours, hitting double-digits in all three games. Over the weekend, Sylla registered a pair of "double-doubles" to finish with 40 points and 25 rebounds, to go along with four assists and a pair of steals. She shot 34.4 per cent from the field (11/32) and made a stellar 17 of 18 free-throws.
Teammate Dianna Ros, a 5-foot-7 senior point guard from Montreal, shot a stellar 7-for-12 from the field, including a 2-for-4 effort from three-point range. She added four assists and three rebounds in a game-high 34 minutes of court-time.
Also making the all-tournament team for McGill was sophomore Carolann Cloutier (21 pts, 5 rbs) of Montreal and Alex Kiss-Rusk (29 pts, 15 rbs) of Beaconsfield, Que.
Top scorers for Toronto was tourney all-star Jill Stratton with 17 points and Liane Bailey with 11 points.
The Martlets improved to 5-1 in preseason play and will have one final non-conference tune-up when they head across the border to play the University of Maine, an NCAA Div. 1 team, on Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. The RSEQ season begins on Nov. 8 with McGill hosting Bishop's.
