Box Score MONTREAL --
Johnny Berhanemeskel scored a game-high 23 points as the Ottawa Gee-Gees overwhelmed McGill 88-56 to capture the men's division of the 20th annual Redbird Classic preseason basketball tournament at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. Ottawa swept all three games, including a 109-70 decision over Brock in Friday and a 106-88 win over StFX, Saturday.
McGill, whose lone victory was a 76-68 decision over Brock on Saturday, finished with a 1-2 record, ending up in a three-way tie for second place with the Badgers and StFX, but taking second on a point-differential tie-breaker.
The Redmen struggled offensively the entire night against Ottawa, shooting just 30 per cent from the field, including an 8-for-29 performance from beyond the arc. "We are still trying to find our identity," said Redmen head coach
David DeAveiro. "When battling through injuries, trying guys out at different positions and playing a team as good as Ottawa, you are going to have nights like this early in the season."
Jeremie Casavant-Dubois, a freshmen from Longueuil, Que., led McGill in scoring with 14 points. He shot 5-for-11 from the floor, draining four from downtown. He also collected seven rebounds and four assists
Team captain
Vincent Dufort, a senior from Smiths Falls, Ont., was the only other Redmen player to reach double figures. He tallied 11 points, shooting 3-for-10 from the field, including two treys and a 3-for-5 performance from the line. Sophomore
Michael Peterkin added nine points and while rookie
Noah Daoust potted seven.
Berhanemeskel was one of three Gee-Gee's to reach double figures in scoring, He was joined by junior
Caleb Agada (14) and senior
Michael L'Africain (10).
Ottawa led 23-9 after the opening quarter and took a 46-19 lead into halftime. The Gee-Gee's never faultered, outscoring McGill 42-37 in the second half, including a 23-21 margin in the third quarter.
"It is a process," added DeAveiro. "We will look at the video and learn from it. We will be ready to compete come the season opener."
The Redmen now find themselves 3-3 in preseason play and will head to the RBC Brock Classic in St. Catharines, Ont., Oct. 24-26, before opening RSEQ regular season play at home Nov.8 against Bishop's.
