Rugby Martlets skunk Sherbrooke, clinch playoff berth

Emily Lai
STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- Carla Massaro scored a pair of tries and Caroline Suchorski added a game-high 13 points as the McGill women's rugby squad routed visiting Sherbrooke 43-0 at McEwen Field, Friday.

The results improved McGill's record to 4-3 in the RSEQ conference and clinched the final playoff berth, two points ahead of fifth-place Montreal (3-3), who hold a game in hand. Should the Carabins upset second-place Laval (5-1) in the final regular-season game on Sunday, the best they could do would be to tie McGill in the standings. However, the Martlets hold the tie-breaker by virtue of a 23-21 victory last week, in their only head-to-head meeting.

Suchorski tallied one try and converted four others, to all but wrap up the RSEQ scoring crown. She has 91 points in seven games, 18 ahead of Laval's Anne-Charlotte Beaulieu, who plays her last scheduled game on Sunday. Should Suchorski manage the feat, it would mark the fourth consecutive season that a McGill player had captured the conference scoring championship.Former Martlet All-Canadian Brianna Miller, who graduated last spring, had won the title in each of the past three campaigns.

Among the six Martlets who tallied tries was Emily Barber, Susanna Beaudin, Katrine Lightstone and Milda Sabiston.

McGill will host St. FX in an exhibition game on Saturday at 1 p.m. before traveling to the nation's capital next Sunday (Oct. 18) to confront pennant-winning Ottawa (7-0) in a sudden-death semifinal at Matt Anthony Field. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. In their only meeting this season, the Gee-Gees hung on for a narrow 10-5 win at McGill's Macdonald campus on Sept. 21.
