MONTREAL -- Freshman
Dele Ogundokun scored a game-high 21 points and rookie
Francois Bourque registered a "double-double" as the seventh-ranked McGill Redmen conquered Concordia 70-49 in men's basketball before 420 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
The result, which avenged Thursday's 69-67 loss at Concordia, gives McGill the upper-hand on a possible tie-breaker should they finish even with the Stingers in the RSEQ standings. With eight games remaining before post-season play, including one more with the Stingers, the Redmen own a 6-2 record and currently share the division lead with Bishop's (6-2) and Concordia (6-4).
Ogundokun, a 6-foot-3 guard from Hamilton, Ont., also grabbed seven rebounds and snagged two steals. He went a lights out 9-of-14 from the floor, including a 2-for-3 performance from downtown.
Bourque, a 6-foot-5 forward from Terrebonne, Que., dropped a dozen points while collecting 11 rebounds. He also had an efficient shooting night knocking down 5 of his 10 shots.
McGill came out looking like they were on a mission.
"We watched the video (of Thursday's two-point loss to Concordia) and we beat ourselves down the stretch," said Redmen head coach David DeAverio. "That normally doesn't happen so tonight we wanted to come out and just simply out hustle them."
They did exactly that, racing to a 23-9 first quarter lead. Concordia was only able to cut that margin by one at halftime as they trailed 34-21. An even third quarter had both sides scoring 15 points. In the final stanza, the Redmen out cored the Stingers 21-13.
McGill did an excellent job containing Concordia's Adam Chmielewski, limiting him to just nine points, only two nights removed from scoring 24.
"We played different guys on him," explained DeAverio. "We put a fresh guy on him, we put a tall guy on him. We just always switched up that look."
This strategy forced the scoring to go through the Stingers secondary options. Mukiya Post and Xander Jean were tied for a team-high 11 points while Jean-Andre Moussignac put in 10.
Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., was the only other Redmen to reach double digits as he tallied 11 points. The co-captain also corralled nine rebounds, dished out five assists and had five steals.
McGill shot 44.3 per cent from the field (27/61) including an impressive 8-for-15 from three-point land. The Stingers seemed to struggle all night long shooting 32.3 per cent from the field (20/62) and only 5-for-21 from beyond the arc.
The Redmen will now host Bishop's in a battle for first place next Thursday (Jan. 30, 8 p.m.) at Love Competition Hall. Concordia will have a week off before facing those same Gaiters on Feb. 7.
