MONTREAL -- Adam Chmielewski scored a game-high 24 points and dished out eight assists as the Concordia Stingers erased a 14-point deficit to upset the No.6-ranked McGill Redmen 69-67 in college hoops at the Concordia Gym, Thursday.
The win catapulted Concordia (6-3) to the top of RSEQ standings, passing the Redmen (5-2) who have now dropped two straight after a 6-0 start and tumbled into a second-place tie with Bishop's (5-1).
Concordia, which also had a 21-point performance from Mukiya Post, led 20-17 after one quarter, before McGill exploded for 24-8 advantage in the second quarter to take a 41-28 lead into the break. McGill extended that to 46-32 just two minutes into the third quarter but the Stingers then roared back to cut the deficit to 53-48 heading into the final frame.
The game featured a frantic finish with four lead changes during the final minute of play.
McGill's Vincent Dufort, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, hit a clutch jumper with 47 seconds left to put the Redmen up 65-64. But the Stingers answered right back with a pair of free-throws by Zach Brisebois to retake the lead 66-65. Dufort drained yet another jumper with 16 seconds remaining to put the Redmen ahead 67-66. But
Chmielewski, who scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half, had the final say, hitting a step-back jumper to go up 68-67 with seven seconds remaining.
McGill had chance in the offensive zone with under five seconds remaining but committed a costly turnover. Forced to foul, Stingers forward
Jean-Andre Moussignac then dropped one of his two free-throws to finish with 16 points.
For the Redmen, junior Ave Bross got a rare start at point-guard and led the way with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He was replacing senior Simon Bibeau, who missed his third straight contest. He sat this one out with an ailing back after missing the previous two while out of town doing job interviews for after graduating.
McGill also had to make do without forward
Nathan Joyal who was ejected six minutes into the contest, along with Concordia starter Mike Fosu, for a brief altercation.
Regis Ivaniukas, a freshman from Oakville, Ont., was the only other Redmen to reach double-digit scoring with 10 points. High-scoring freshman
Francois Bourque was held to eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
McGill, which was out-rebounded (41-32) for the first time this season, shot 40.7 per cent from the floor (22/54), 31.3 from the three-point arc (5/16) and only 64.3 from the free-throw line (18/28). The Stingers shot 35.5 and 31.8, respectivley and drained an impressive 18 of 20 from the line.
McGill will have an opportunity to get back on track and extract some revenge when they face the Stingers at Love Competition Hall on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the back end of a women's and men's doubleheader.
