NEW YORK CITY – The McGill University track and field team broke an 18-year-old school record in the men's 4x800-metre relay on Saturday at the 12th annual Armory Collegiate Invitational, arguably the largest indoor meet in North America, which features more than 100 university and collegiate teams.

The quartet, which finished fifth overall in seven minutes, 40.74 seconds, featured freshman Benjamin Raymond of Laval, Que., on the leadoff leg, followed by freshman Javier Montalvo of Closter, N.J., sophomore Michael Abramson of Westmount, Que., and Vincent Parent-Pichette, a rookie from St. Paul de Joliette, Que.

They erased the old mark of 7:41.90 set in 1995 by Charles Thomas, Alex Hutchinson, Peter Madden and Gerry Zavorsky.

Finishing ahead of McGill in the race was Columbia (7:30.15), followed by Duke (7:30.24), Texas A & M (7:31.79) and Albany (7:38.61).

Midway through Saturday's festivities, the McGill team and head coach Dennis Barrett were presented with the 2013 Louise Tricard Sportsmanship Award, which is given annually to a school that has shown outstanding enthusiasm for the competition in previous years. Louise Tricard, who died of cancer in 2008, was a renowned track enthusiast, who was a star athlete, builder and historian in the New York area.
