QUEBEC CITY – Freshman Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the No.9-ranked McGill Redmen escaped with a 62-59 victory at Laval in the RSEQ regular season basketball opener at Centre PEPS, Friday.

Combined with McGill's 44-33 win in the women's game, it marked the school's third hoops sweep in three consecutive trips to the provincial capital after 32 unsuccessful attempts to sweep at Laval since McGill accomplished the feat on Jan. 25, 1997.

The Redmen led 17-16 after the opening quarter but Laval took a slim 33-32 edge at the half. McGill then moved into overdrive, outscoring the Rouge et Or 19-9 for a 51-42 lead after three.

"We struggled offensively but really executed in the third quarter," said David DeAveiro, in his fourth season as head coach of the Redmen. "We seemed to be in control heading into the final quarter but kept turning the ball over and really had to hang on for the win. A couple of our vets struggled out there but the rest of the team picked up the slack. We had a lot of people contributing to the win."

Ogundokun, a 6-foot-3 guard who was also credited with four steals and a blocked shot, went 6-for-12 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Thomas Lacy, a shooting-guard from Jericho, Vt., was the only other member of the Redmen to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points. Rookie Francois Bourque, a native of Terrebonne, Que., scored eight and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. He was only 1-for-4 shooting but went 6-for-10 from the line.

Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., added seven points while Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., and Ave Bross of Toronto contributed six apiece.

McGill, which had a 40-35 edge in rebounds and a 12-7 advantage in steals, shot 36.2 per cent from the field, 31.6 from three-point range and 58.3 from the line. Laval replied on 29.5, 42.1 and 62.5 per cent, respectively.

Three members of the Rouge et Or hit double figures, led by Thibaud DeZutter with 17, while Karl Demers-Belanger and Hugues Ryan added 10 points apiece.

With a 14-47 record in the last 61 meetings, McGill victories over Laval have been few and far between over the past decade but this was the fifth consecutive Redmen decision against the Rouge et Or since a 57-56 loss in Quebec City on Feb. 9, 2012. Last year, McGill claimed all four meetings, their first sweep over the Rouge et Or since 1995-96.

The Redmen (1-0) play at UQAM (1-0) on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., while Laval (0-1) travels to Lennoxville on Nov. 22 to play Bishop's.
