Redmen rally to knock off Gaiters in college hoops battle of undefeated teams

MONTREAL -- Nathan Joyal scored 17 points off the bench and Vincent Dufort registered a "double-double" as the No.6-ranked McGill Redmen basketball squad rallied from an 11-point deficit to defeat Bishop's 81-63 at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

It was the first meeting between these bitter rivals since McGill erased a 15-point deficit to edge the Gaiters 77-74 in the RSEQ conference championship game last spring. The victory, McGill's third straight over Bishop's, puts McGill all alone in first place with a 4-0 record atop the RSEQ conference standings and extends their modest win streak against conference opponents to six. Bishop's suffered their first setback of the season and dropped to 3-1

Joyal, a 6-foot-5 forward from St. Lazare, Que., went 6-for-12 from the floor, including a 2-for-4 performance from three-point range. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul-line and was credited with a pair of rebounds and two assists.

Dufort, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Smiths Falls, Ont., put in a solid nights work with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He made only 4-of-15 shots but one was a tray and he went 4-for-4 from the line.

Facing adversity for the first time this season, the Redmen trailed 23-16 after the opening quarter and found themselves down 44-34 at halftime, largely due to a poor 9-for-35 shooting performance.

"The first half we tried to do too many things and didn't keep it simple," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. "With young players you tend to over coach a bit so in the second half we just kept it simple. I thought we got outhustled and outworked in the first half which is not usually how we play. I challenged our guys to play a little tougher and not let them out work us."

The Redmen responded by out scoring the Gaiters 47-19 in the second half, including a 16-6 margin in the third stanza. They knocked down six three-pointers and went a cool 7-for-8 from the foul-line. McGill also dominated the glass in the second half out rebounding a much bigger Bishop's lineup 29-19 to finish with a 46-39 edge.

DeAveiro was also pleased with the play of his subs as they racked up a combined 38 points. "You got to have a bench, especially when you want to play hard defence," he said. "Guys are going to get tired so you need players that can step in and perform at the same level."

Aside from Joyal's output off the bench, freshman Regis Invaniukas and junior Rodrigo Imperador chipped in with 11 and six points, respectively.

Simon Bibeau, who has bounced back from an early season knee injury, played a team high 28 minutes, scoring nine points while dishing out eight assists. He also had three steals and a pair of rebounds. Teammates Dele Ogundokun and Michael Peterkin, both rookies, added eight points apiece.

Scott Ring, a senior from Ottawa, had a game-high 19 points in a losing cause for the Gaiters while their big man Mike Andrews, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound centre from Oakville, Ont., had 12 points. Bishop's struggled with turnovers all night as McGill had a 21-9 advantage in that department, scoring 24 points off Gaiter miscues.

The Redmen shot 32.1 per cent from the floor, went 8-for-28 from the arc and sank an impressive 80.8 per cent from the charity stripe (21/26), compared to BU, which shot 34.9, 20.0 and 72.7, respectively.

McGill heads into the holiday break a perfect record in four conference games. They will resume action on Jan.9 when Laval (1-2) visits. Bishop's will resume play Jan. 17 on the road against UQAM (1-3).

REDMEN RAP: Former McGill football coach Larry Ring, who served as the team's defensive coordinator when they won the Vanier Cup in 1987, drove in from Ottawa for the game to watch his son Scott play for the Gaiters.
