Miller and Foster guide rugby women to first win over Laval in six years

Brianna Miller

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. –  Brianna Miller scored 18 points and Deanna Foster added three tries as the McGill women's rugby team spanked visiting Laval 49-18 at McEwen Field, Sunday.

It was only McGill's third victory over Laval in 15 lifetime meetings dating back to 2005, snapping a six-year, nine-game losing streak to the Rouge et Or.

Miller, a physical education senior from Pte. Claire, Que., who leads the RSEQ league scoring race with 92 points in six games, had a pair of penalty goals to go along with six conversions.

Foster, who hails from Caledon, Ont., and leads the conference with 12 tries, was selected by the Laval coaching staff as McGill's player of the game. It was her second consecutive game with a hat-trick of tries.

Other try scorers for the Martlets included junior Emily Barber of Fenelon Falls, Que., Montrealer Caroline Binette and Noala Beattie-Dagenais, a senior from Hemmingford, Que.

Leading the scoring for Laval was Claudia Kedney-Bolduc of Lévis, Que., who tallied nine points with one try and a pair of conversions. Rounding out the Rouge et Or scoring was Kathleen Keller and Dominique Laliberté-Martineau, both natives of Quebec City, with one try apiece.

The win improved McGill's record to 5-1 and helped them maintain a grasp on second-place, tied with Ottawa in the eight-team RSEQ league. It also provided the Martlets with a four-point cushion over fourth-place Laval (3-3).

McGill will close out regular season play at Ottawa on Oct. 11, in a 7 p.m. start. That game will determine who finishes second in the standings and will have home-field advantage in the league semifinal.
