It was sweet revenge for the unranked Stingers, who were beaten 69-68 by McGill in the only other meeting of the season, at the Concordia campus, on Nov. 24.
The Stingers led 18-15 after the first quarter and 38-31 at halftime before pulling away with a 27-16 advantage in the third stanza. Concordia had a huge 46-28 edge in rebounding.
Desmarais was one of five Stingers in double figures, along with Kafil Eyitayo (17), Evens Laroche (14), Jerome Blake (12) and Taylor Garner (10).
McGill, which only committed 10 turnovers, shot 35.4 per cent from the floor (23/70), 29.4 from three-point land (5/17) and 58.3 from the line, (14/24) compared to the Stingers, who shot 45.7, 37.5 and 58.8, respectively.
Nathan Joyal, a political science sophomore from St. Lazare, Que., came off the bench to lead the Redmen with 13 points in 18 minutes of playing time. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward went 3-for-5 from three-point range, added three assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals.
Teammates
Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., and
Winn Clark of Mission Hills, KS, contributed 10 points apiece. Clark, the team captain, added a team-high six rebounds.
The Stingers defence shut down McGill's top two scorers.
Vincent Dufort, who is averaging over 14 points per game, tallied seven points and five rebounds. Point-guard
Adrian Hynes-Guery, who is averaging over 13 ppg, was held in check with just eight points. It was his first game in six weeks, since returning from injury that caused him to miss the Ryerson tourney in late December.
Concordia, which regained the RSEQ conference lead with a 4-2 record, will host last-place UQAM (1-5) on Saturday.
McGill, which dropped to 11-4 against CIS opponents and 3-2 in league play, will host Laval (2-4) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
