Brianna Miller of Pte. Claire, Que., scored 19 points and
Diana Foster of Caledon, Ont., added 15 as the McGill women's rugby team hammered the defending CIS national champion Guelph Gryphons 89-0 in preseason play at McKewen Field, Sunday.
Miller, a 21-year-old physical education junior, racked up eight conversions and a penalty goal, while Foster, an 18-year-old arts freshman, tallied three tries.
Casey Thorburn of St. John's, Nfld., Erica Saabas of Hamilton, Ont., and Caroline Suchorski of Mississauga, Ont., contributed two tries apiece.
Rounding out the rout, with single tries each, was Emily Barber of Fenelon Falls, Ont., Julia White of Campellville, Ont., Marie-Hélène Laforest of Montreal, Kristina Dunn of New Glasgow, N.S., and Rachelle Rose of St. Laurent, Que.
McGill (1-0) will host the St. Lawrence College Vikings from Kingston, Ont., on Labour Day Monday on McKewen Field. Kickoff is set for at 2 p,m.
MARTLET MURMURS: It was McGill's highest offensive output since a lopsided 109-0 conquest over Bishop's on Oct. 15, 2011, when Miller tied a team and conference record with 13 conversions. The first woman to hit lucky 13 was McGill's Sandra Simpson in a 113-0 shellacking of Sherbrooke on Sept. 25, 2005.
