Won 71-5 at Carleton
OTTAWA -- Brianna Miller of Pte. Claire, Que., racked up 31 points as visiting McGill opened regular season play in the RSEQ women's university rugby conference by crushing Carleton 71-5, Sunday.
Eight different players scored for the Martlets, who led 40-0 at halftime before Natasha Smith put the Ravens on the scoreboard early in the second half.
Miller, who tallied three tries and added eight conversions, was 13 points shy of her single-game school record (44) registered against Bishop's last year.
Casey Thorburn added a pair while single tries were scored by Deanna Foster of Caledon, Ont., Caroline Binette of Montreal, Kayleigh Walsh of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que., Caroline Suchorski of Kirkland, Que., Julia White of Campbellville, Ont., and Erika Saabas of Hamilton, Ont.
The Martlets, who hammered Guelph 89-0 in preseason play last week, are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. They will try to snap a seven-game losing streak to Concordia on Sept. 12, when they travel across town to take on last year's defending conference champs in the annual Kelly-Ann Drummond Memorial Cup game. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. McGill's last win over the Stingers was a 14-10 decision on Sept. 7, 2008.
