MONTREAL - Mike Andrews from Oakville, Ont., scored 21 points as visiting Bishop's surprised the No.3-ranked McGill Redmen and came away with an 84-79 decision in basketball action at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

The result snapped McGill's 11-game win streak and was their first loss against a CIS opponent after the Redmen had racked up a 10-0 mark, including a 3-0 slate in league play.

Andrews, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound centre, also grabbed six rebounds and had four steals. He shot 9-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

In a back-and-forth game that featured 15 lead changes, eight by the Gaiters, McGill led 20-17 after the opening stanza, trailed 37-35 at the half and 60-56 after three quarters.

Four Redmen reached double figures in scoring, led by a break-out game from Simon Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., who recently returned from knee surgery and came off the bench to tally 21 points in 17 minutes of court-time. He shot 7-for-11, including a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the three-point arc and a 2-for-2 effort from the line.

Other top marksmen for McGill included Montrealer Adrian Hynes-Guery (13), Te'Jour Riley (11) from Bermuda and Aleksander Mitrovic, a native of Belgrade, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Gaiters defence managed to neutralize two key Redmen starters as freshman guard Christian McCueand sophomore guard Vincent Dufort were both limited to seven points apiece.

Early in the game Bishop's had asserted themselves with an inside presence. McGill started the fourth quarter in a zone defence and the Gaiters took advantage. When the Redmen showed zone, BU adjusted well and hit three consecutive three pointers to open the quarter and clearly grabbed momentum.

The Gaiters led by 14 points with 6:35 remaining but McGill slowly chipped away and cut the lead to just three points with 1:39 to go. BU point guard Scott Ring of Ottawa, took matters into his own hands when he hit an off-balance shot, drew a foul and successfully completed the three-point play.

Despite the heroics, McGill was able to cut the lead to two points and force a Gaiters turnover with 24 seconds to go. The Redmen were not able to convert and following a pair of Ring free throws the Gaiters had a two possession lead. A steal by Andrews sealed the deal.

McGill shot 43.9 per cent from the field (29/66), 39.1 from the arc (9/23) and 70.6 from the line, while BU shot 44.3, 31.3 and 81.0, respectively. The Redmen out-rebounded Bishop's 36-24 and made nine three pointers. But they turned the ball over 24 times and committed seven more fouls than the Gaiters.

The Redmen get a four-week breather to focus on exams before resuming their schedule at Ryerson's National Invitational Tournament in Toronto, an eight-team affair at the new Mattamy Athletic Centre in Maple Leaf Gardens, Dec. 28-30. McGill will open against the UPEI Panthers on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. Other participating teams include Ryerson, McMaster, Guelph, Humber College, Centennial College and the Chinese Under-19 squad.

Bishop's, which improved to 2-1, returns to action on Dec. 28 when they play in the UQAM Holiday tourney.

REDMEN RAP: Scott Ring's father is Larry Ring, a former Bishop's football player who went on to a long coaching career, including a stint at McGill where he served as defensive coordinator when the Redmen won their only Vanier Cup title in 1987.
